I think a lot of these books are wonderful,
except the Dark Matters Trilogy. The author
is an atheist and uses his writing to get others
to believe the same.
I don’t know what people believe. I believe in
God and would want my child to do this same.
How about a Children’s Bible with lots of bright
colorful pictures? I just bought one for my eight
year old neice. I pray it helps her in this life
and the next.

I am 22, and your post made me tear up multiple times. I started reading thanks to my dad, as well. He would read with me every night before bed. Books were a dear friend to me, especially in elementary school. I was a young, shy, girl but the characters I met in my books taught me how to be strong, brave and outspoken. My relationship with my dad is still so important to me, and we still bond over (and now share) books. So many of the books you listed are ones we grew up reading. Your daughters are lucky to have you. When I was little, my dad and I had a tradition every year on my birthday where he would hold me in his arms, walk around the house with me, and tell me the story of the year I was born. I think I was 10 the year I told him I was too old. It makes me so sad now thinking of how he must have felt that day. No matter how old you get, the bond between a daughter and a father is special and so important.

Thanks for this! All the best,

Cree

Hi Suzana! I’m so glad you enjoyed this list. Thanks for the heads up about the trilogy. I’ll definitely look for that! P.S. I ADORED Pippi Longstocking!!

I used to read with my son who is an adult now, I miss those days so…I think his favorites were the books in the Redwall series , Brian Jaques. As a little girl, I used to devour Alice in the wonderland and all the books by Astrid Lundgren, aspecially Pippi ☺.

You’re welcome! You’re welcome! Every child’s journey into the world of chapter books begins when they are ready to take those first important steps. So glad that Ruby the Red Fairy, and her fairy friends, were what opened the door, as it were, into the wonderful world of chapter books. Have fun sharing this experience with your child…you will both be the better for it.

I have been trying to get my just turned 5 year old into wanting to listen to chapter books for the last 2 years or so and she has not been interested. She loves, loves being read to however. Her own reading ability is about at a second grade level and she is reading every picture book in the house. However I could not get her to sit and listen to any chapter book I picked out. I brought the color fairy series of 7 books home, and she was hooked. She is begging me to read them and has stated to read her own chapter books herself, all because of her interest in the Rainbow Magic series.

Both great for beginner chapter books.

I thank you for leaving the comment that you did. There is nothing silly about it at all. That you read to your u born child is just one indication that this child was loved. You and your daughter are both lucky to have each other. It is funny but, predictable I suppose, that since handing this post off to Jackie, I have thought of several other excellent books that we read together aroudn the age your daughter is now. Books like The Secret Garden, Charlie and the Choclate Factory, The BFG, The Litte Prince and so on. Enjoy this time with your daughter. I found that age seven and eight was when Leah really took off and the books we were reading really got more interesting and involved. Have fun. Cuddle. Enjoy. 🙂

I love that you read to her before she was even born, Kate! And I’m so glad you can use this post as a resource now that she’s old enough to start exploring books of her own!

It might sound silly but I started reading fairy tales to my daughter while I was pregnant, I couldn’t even wait until she was born! Now this list is just what I needed because she is 8 and I have been wracking my brain trying to find good suitable books for her she hasn’t already read and which are not too scary or filled with themes too mature for her age. Thank you

Thanks for your kind words, Deb. I am glad that you read the article “fully”, too. As you, no doubt understand, when you love your children, you find ways to express that beyond hugs and kisses. Reading together does that for Leah and I. Can’t wait to see what comes next for us!

You have a wonderful selection of chapter books here. By the way, the Smile and Sisters books have been read over and over again at our house, too.

It was a trip down memory lane as I read so many of those books to my three daughters. Your choice of books for girls is definitely approved by my family, and even as they read their many texts and articles for university, the reading and books we shared when they were children has served them well. Thank you for supplying this excellent list to open the door to reading really great books to boys and girls alike.
