Thanks for the great idea – going to try this at a youth camp out this next week.

That age group would likely find our traditional cardboard weaving and circle weaving easier, Shan. The straw weaving is a bit tricky, and more appropriate for age 10 and up.

I’m not sure I understand how it comes out if you’ve tied that piece of yarn to another piece of yarn. It wouldn’t be able to slide out of the tied end, and if you’ve left the tails at the other end long enough, the weaving shouldn’t slip off the yarn at the other untied end. It could if you shimmied the weaving off the straws quickly, but it sounds like you’re doing it slowly and carefully. You might try leaving longer tails at the untied end. Other than that, I’m kind of stumped about what exactly is happening and how you might prevent it.

What are we doing wrong? We tie 2 strings together, tie the other two together, and tie all 4 together. Then we shimmy it off slowly, but one of the center yarn pieces in the straws always comes out. Any tips?

You’ll need about 7.5 meters of yarn for one bookmark.
