Recently, I had the pleasure of "virtually" meeting Stacie Erfle, a paediatric occupational therapist and author who really knows her stuff when it comes to helping children develop their fine-motor abilities with playful, educational activities.

Stacie offered me a copy of her e-book, Fine Motor ABC (which is also available in print), and I loved it! Not only are the activities in her book fun and easy, they incorporate the alphabet, sign language, rhyming, art, spelling, and gross motor activities as well.

I was so impressed by Fine Motor ABC that I invited Stacie over to my blog to tell us more about it, and to give us a deeper understanding of how and why her targeted activities will benefit your child.

She's here with us today!

And it's not JUST pretty, this craft taught a lot of different skills, and kept the kids busy for over an hour.

The gang that made these were ages 5-10, and they all LOVED it.

Although it's a perfect Valentine's project, you could tweak it to suit any day of the year.

Have a look, and tell me what you think! I mean it! I need to know that I'm not the only one who gets a little starry-eyed with I look at the photos!

City Skyline Silhouette Art Project for Kids https://happyhooligans.ca/city-skyline-silhouette-art/ https://happyhooligans.ca/city-skyline-silhouette-art/#respond Thu, 02 Feb 2017 08:53:40 +0000 https://happyhooligans.ca/?p=26518 Squeee! I'm so excited to share our latest art project with you!

If you're looking for a cool art project to do with your kids at home, or with your students in art class you'll love this one.

When you see it, it may even take you back to your own childhood. may take you back to your own childhood, but we've put a modern day spin on it.

Using just three supplies: coloured water, paper towel and black paper, the hooligans, ages 4 through 10 made this city skyline silhouette art recently, and the results were beautiful!

It's particularly fun because of the drip-art technique we used to make the backdrops.

And not only are the results beautiful, there's lots of fine-motor development going on with this art activity too!

Check it out through the link below!
This one's great for all ages too.

Patriotic God’s Eye Ornament – for Canada Day or Independence Day https://happyhooligans.ca/gods-eye-ornament-canada-day-craft/ https://happyhooligans.ca/gods-eye-ornament-canada-day-craft/#comments Thu, 23 Jun 2016 04:10:35 +0000 https://happyhooligans.ca/?p=20951 When I think of classic childhood crafts, a God's Eye ornament is right up there at the top of the list.

Remember all the hours you spent weaving these? Well, it's time to pass this classic along to your own kids!

Bust out the red and white yarn, and grab a couple of sticks because we're making God's eye ornaments for Canada Day! They're gorgeous, a super representation of our Canadian flag!

And if you're in the U.S., just add blue yarn for a fun 4th of July ornament!

DIY Salt Tray Writing Activity for Preschoolers https://happyhooligans.ca/salt-tray-writing-activity-for-preschoolers/ https://happyhooligans.ca/salt-tray-writing-activity-for-preschoolers/#comments Wed, 24 Feb 2016 06:23:44 +0000 https://happyhooligans.ca/?p=23630 This fabulous salt tray writing activity is a terrific way for little ones to practice their pre-writing skills!

It's a fun and creative way for preschoolers to work on letter and number formation, and printing their name. Even toddlers can strengthen their pencil grip while they doodle and draw in a salt tray.

We coloured our salt, but you can leave yours plain if you'd rather. This activity sets up in under a minute, and will provide hours of fun and learning.

Make designs, print letters, doodle and draw, and then shake it clean and start all over again!

Have a look! You and your preschoolers are going to love this one!

It's a great craft for tweens and teens. Younger kids can enjoy wrapping twigs and sticks with yarn to produce colourful pieces of art. Both processes are a lot of fun, and great for using up scraps of wool and yarn that you have kicking around. These activities are terrific for improving co-ordination and fine-motor skills as well!
