Great idea adding the avocado, Denise! I’ll have to try that. We ate a ton of this soup this summer. It’s my favourite homemade soup ever! Glad you loved it too!

Going to freeze 20 minutes before I pureed it I added half a avcado instead of the last butter. And left the water out for a thicker soup. Served with a little parson cheese . To die for.

You bet! You can chopped nuts to the cake batter (walnuts or pecans would be nice), or you can sprinkle chopped nuts on top of the frosting.

You can use any mild bar soap I think, Michelle. If you’re doing the microwave trick first, it has to be Ivory though.

She is very smart and articulate, when she wants to be. Other times she completely shuts off, when I say shut off I mean off not a word, movement, with a blank stare. She will act well below her intelligence level ie: say she can’t drink her milk or juice, say she can’t eat or use the restroom. When I’m serving age appropriate and child friendly food that I’ve seen her eat before. She will do things that she knows are not o.k. ie: break my child’s toys, throw herself down in a screaming crying fit while doing her hair or for no reason at all, throw food and drinks. Her mother is a big issue from what I know. She yells at her at the top of her lungs and has called her names. Blames her for being late for work, did t have a car seat for her, and doesn’t bathe her. I pick the mother and child up to take the mother to work and have witnessed all these things. I bathe her when she comes to my home because it can be a week at a time In-between babysitting her and she will have the same complex hairdo I put in. Her clothes are too big because she is underweight, or dirty, I bought her clothes to have at my home. She doesn’t get enough sleep because she has huge bags user her eyes. And I don’t know if she get feed at home and if she does if it’s enough she refuses to talk about it says i dont know. Or nothing. It’s hard to watch her as I try to treat her as my own but I feel I’ve went above and beyond for this child, and feel so terrible giving her back to her mother because she will behave if I have her 2-3 days in a row then come back and terrorize my home. Please help!!!!! I don’t know what to do about her and her mom… I don’t want to punish the child but I can’t have a child with that continued behavior at my home. 🙁

He has some sensory issues and it is very hard to get him to do any crafts except to maybe scribble once in a while. Do you have any ideas that might help him out? I just love him so much and would like to make his day full of new and wonderful things. Thank-you so much Jackie for all you do. You are truly an inspiration to us all. God Bless!

Adel, I’ve just written a post about simple activities to do with babies and toddlers. Here is the link: https://happyhooligans.ca/fine-motor-activities/. At your daughter’s age, it’s not as important to provide her with “toys” as it is to provide her with simple activities that she can learn from, and that give her the opportunity to develop her muscles, motor control and thinking processes. Very simple instruments like the ones in the post, or wooden spoons, pots and pans, paper to crumple and rip etc. It doesn’t matter to your child whether the item is a “funny toy”. Simple processes will engage her and hold her interest. Just be sure that any items you give her do not post a choking hazard. Here is a link to some homemade toys and games that you might refer to as she grows and develops. http://www.pinterest.com/happyhooligans/homemade-toys-games/

On a personal note ,right now I am a bit lost with with my 09-month daughter as I wish to provide her with some funny toys and activities that she needs badly right now , whereas she got sued with the same toys at home .
As soon as I step in the house after the working hours , I could feel she missed me by jerking her arms & feet like crazy asking me to play with her . see what I mean , I am at sea and in chapter 11 right now for I can’t afford to buy those costly fancy toys for the time being.
Therefore , would you be kind enough and provide me with some great home-made toys or activites to make her happy.
I appreciate your support Jackie.
Best Regards

Hi Diane! My apologies. I linked to Amazon in my post, but it wasn’t the page I wanted to link to. I’ve changed it now, so if you click on the words “glass beads” in the “supplies” part of the post, it will take you to a bunch of the flat glass beads on amazon. I”m not sure if there are multi-coloured beads in one bag though or if they’re all individual colours. I get most of mine at thrift shops, but I know I’ve seen multi-coloured packages in stores. Most likely craft/hobby stores i.e. Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Walmart or even some dollar stores.

You can sew through them for bookmarks, ATCs, journal covers, “envelopes”, etc.

Yes, we do spend as much time as we can outside when the weather is decent. It’s been really mild here this fall, so there haven’t been too many days that we’ve been really cold. On the days that are super cold, we do our crafting inside, and we’re definitely crafting more indoors now than in the warm months, but if it’s nice enough for them to be out without mitts, we often take the craft outdoors. I haven’t had a problem with paint or glue on their coats. If we were doing something that I thought was super messy, we’d save it for warm weather so they wouldn’t ruin their coats. And they have aprons that they can wear if we’re doing something really messy like cloud dough or shaving cream. As far as their regular clothes, we don’t worry about mess. The parents all know that my philosophy is that the children learn best and have the most fun when they can create freely without worrying about ruining a shirt or getting paint on their pants. It’s really important to me that no child holds back from being creative because of their fear of getting messy, so I encourage parents to send them in clothes that can stand a stain or two. The parents are all fine with that. 🙂

I am also an at-home childcare provider and I love all your crafts and activities- my sensory bin changes monthly now- inspired by YOU! I do have a question though…. I notice nearly all of your pictures are taken outdoors- which I thought was fabulous in the summer months to do all these activities outside. But now that the weather is colder, how do you do that? Don’t you freeze? How do you keep the kids coats from getting covered in paint or glue? I’d love to hear how you make all that work. It’s a fabulous idea, but I just can’t grasp it- (too cold, ruining coats/clothes, etc.) Thanks so much for your blog- it’s my go-to for inspiration!

Hi, Nadia,
Thank you for your kind comments. I’m glad that you appreciate our approach to play and learning!
Ours is just a small home daycare located in Ontario, Canada. I am the sole employee here, and I’m sorry to tell you that I’m not hiring. It’s just me and the hooligans. Although there are days when having an assistant would be very nice indeed, my daycare is not large enough that I would employ one.
I am flattered by your interest though!
Cheers and good luck in your endeavours in the pre-school world!

I am currently a preschool teacher, and what I love about your center is how free it is to the children. The water play, the jungle walks, all of it seems to be magical. Are you hiring? 🙂

I feel very inspired by your ideas and wish I’d come across you years ago.. Oh well, better late than never. Prior to becoming a mum, I worked as a qualified early childhood educator in long day childcare. I’ve been mainly a stay at home mum for the past 5 years and enjoyed doing different activites (incl art & craft) with my daughter at home.
Jessica, my daughter, starts school at the end of January and I recently took on a part time position as a Cook in a child care centre as the hours will suit for drop off and pick up once school starts.
I do like the idea of being a family day care provider and may look at that one day so much so that I can’t part with resources and toys incase I do venture down that track.
Can I ask, do you miss adult interaction during the day? That cornerns me that I’d feel abit isolated. I’d appreciate your thoughts.
Anyway thank you so much for a interesting read!
Cheers
Lisa

Also, I so love the headline picture. Very Happy Hooligans indeed!

Wow, Jo! I can see why it would drive you crazy! You must be just bursting to get started!! I’m so excited for you to be breaking out of the “cookie cutter” environment you’ve been in! You’ll have a blast getting creative and messy with the little ones! Let me know when you get things up and running! You’re always welcome to ask questions, share ideas, post pics of your crafts and activities on my Happy Hooligans facebook wall!
Good luck Jo! Keep me posted on how you’re doing!

I am taking classes to open my own home daycare. I am excited and totally petrified all at the same time. I work in a preschool that use all pre-made crafts, pre printed coloring pages, and the children are NEVER allowed to do anything messy. I have worked there for 7 years and we have done the same dittos, Oriental Trading crafts and printed off tracing pages every year. It makes me absolutely CRAZY! I cant wait to be able to be creative and have fun with my kids!!!

Lots of love and hugs,
Jo

Thank you so much, Megan! I just love hearing about it when someone loves what they see here! I haven’t really done a post on organization. I’m fairly anal and organized here though, and at the end of the day, I don’t want to feel like I live in a daycare (lol), so it all gets packed away in armoirs, cupboards, drawers etc. Clear containers are a lifesaver for miscellaneous supplies. They stack nicely and make it easy to find things. I guess I really should do a post on organization one day.

(Just recently found you due to someone pinning your various homemade ornament ideas.) As a former biology teacher, and now stay-at-home-mom to a 3.5 yr old and a 1 yr old, I love anything hands-on and messy! 🙂 I haven’t had the opportunity to go waaay back on your blog, but would love to see some of your storage and organization for the “stuff!” And once again, thank you thank you thank you again for your inspiration and creativity!
